Coordinate Your Outfits for Your Engagement Photos

While you and your partner don’t need to match exactly, in fact, I usually advise against it, coordinating your outfits will create a cohesive and visually pleasing look. I always suggest couples pick a color palette or theme that complements both of you. Consider the location and the season when making your decision. Soft, pastel tones work beautifully for a beach or garden shoot, while rich jewel tones can make a statement in an urban setting.

Embrace Your Personal Style

Your engagement photos should reflect your personality and style as a couple. Whether you prefer casual and laid-back or glamorous and sophisticated, let your outfits speak to who you are. I always recommend that my couples don’t try to look like something they’re not. As a wedding photographer, nothing makes engagement photos more awkward and uncomfortable than a couple who’s not comfortable with what they’re wearing. If you’re known for your classic and timeless fashion sense, flowy maxi dresses and floral prints might be your go-to for your engagement photos. Remember, confidence is key, so choose outfits that make you feel amazing. Feel free to create a Pinterest board with the vibe you hope to have for your engagement photos.

Consider the Location When Dressing for Your Engagement Shoot

Your proposal location and engagement shoot can provide inspiration for your outfit choices. If you’re heading to a picturesque park, consider wearing outfits that blend with the natural surroundings. Wearing something like a tailored dress will appear standout and out of place in that setting. While earthy tones or soft neutrals can complement the greenery beautifully. On the other hand, if you’re shooting against a vibrant cityscape, don’t be afraid to embrace bold colors and modern styles that contrast with the urban backdrop.

Dress for the Season

One of the common mistakes couples make when planning their engagement session is they forget to take the season into account. When it comes to engagement photography, if you’re uncomfortable, too cold, or too warm, it’ll show in photos. Our goal as wedding and couple photographers is to make sure that you’re as comfortable as can be, that way we can get the most authentic you in your final product.

During warmer months, I recommend opting for lightweight fabrics, breezy dresses, and linen shirts. For a winter shoot, layer up with cozy sweaters, jackets, and scarves. And don’t forget to accessorize accordingly. I love seeing hats, sunglasses, and statement jewelry on couples because their personality can really shine through in these little accents. If picking the right outfit is overwhelming to you, no need to stress. There are a ton of great websites you can rent engagement outfits from.

Pay Attention to Fit and Comfort

No matter what you choose to wear, make sure your outfits fit well and are comfortable to move around in. Ill-fitting clothes can be distracting and may affect your confidence during the shoot. Additionally, they can look a little awkward on camera, because a camera focal length draws more attention to certain details.

Avoid clothes that are too tight, restrictive, or prone to wrinkling. If something can wrinkle easily, it’ll probably wrinkle during the shoot. I always recommend our engagement photography couples opt for fabrics that breathe and allow them to feel at ease, so they can focus on enjoying the experience.

Your engagement photos are a celebration of your love story, and dressing appropriately for the occasion can make a significant difference in the final results. Focus on wearing something that you both enjoy and feel good in. That’ll make a drastic difference in the final results of your engagement photos.

When you’re ready to shoot your special day, reach out for a photography experience that will beautifully document your love and preserve these precious moments for a lifetime.
